Bernt has a doctorate based on soil-erosion studies in Lesotho in Southern Africa, a Licentiate and a BSc degree in Physical Geography, as well as a BSc in Hydrology, all from Uppsala University, Sweden. He has 40 years of broad experience from environmental and water-resources work in over 60 countries worldwide, working at both practical and strategic levels. ESIAs, sediment transport and hydrology/water resources-related topics are his specialties and applications have focussed on the power sector, specifically hydropower. Bernt worked for 15 years for Vattenfall, the largest power utility in Sweden, as an in-house consultant with assignments both within the organisation and consulting to other companies, developers, development banks etc. As part of his strategic environmental responsibilities for the hydropower section of the company, he was project manager for the world’s first ISO 14025-certified Environmental Product Declaration (hydropower electricity from Lule Älv, Sweden) in 1999. He was also Vice President for environmental affairs for Vattenfall’s Latin American investment company in 2000-2001. As a consultant, Bernt has carried out and/or reviewed socio-environmental and sustainability assessments in a wide variety of countries, and has also been the resident project manager for the Ruhudji Hydropower project in Tanzania in 2008-09. Doug Smith is an independent consultant with twenty-five years of international experience in social and environmental assessment and due diligence, with a focus on renewable energy including hydropower. Doug is a leading specialist on the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol, and was one of the first assessors to be accredited to provide official Protocol assessments. He has led eight official Protocol assessments and participated in more than 20, assessing all Protocol topics, on projects from 3 MW to 14,000 MW. He is a highly experienced trainer, providing training in environmental and social sustainability to audiences of up to 30 participants, providing over 30 events to project developers and financial institutions in the past years in all regions. He led the first Early Stage assessment in Croatia in June 2014, and a further Early Stage assessment in Ghana in April 2015. Helen has played a leading role in development and implementation of the Hydropower Sustainability Tools since the early 2000s, including coordinating the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Forum (2008-2010), developing training materials, and authoring the IHA’s Hydropower Sustainability Guidelines on Good International Industry Practice (2018) and How to Guide for Resettlement (2020). Helen has participated in and led hydropower sustainability assessments in Australia, Austria, Bhutan, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Iceland, India, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, South Africa and Vietnam. Helen holds a B.Sc. (Earth Science), M.Env.Sc. (Environmental Science), and PhD (Civil Engineering, on riverine interactions of regulated flows with mine tailings). Helen led award-winning social and environmental programs for Hydro Tasmania between 1997-2015, and since 2015 has delivered sustainable hydropower-related assignments as an independent consultant for the World Bank, International Finance Corporation, Asian Development Bank, Mekong River Commission, International Hydropower Association, major energy businesses, and other clients. Joerg Hartmann is a consultant and owner of Sustainable Water & Energy LLC, based in Estes Park, Colorado, USA. Afsona is the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer at Pamir Energy Company, Central Asia’s first public-private partnership dedicated to rural electrification. Alda Isabel Anibal Salomão is a Mozambican environmental lawyer, land governance specialist, and human rights activist. She is the founder and General Director of TINDZILA Sustainable Pathways Association/ Associacao TINDZILA Caminhos Sustentaveis, in Mozambique, created in 2016 with “land governance and human rights” as its core theme. Before TINDZILA, Alda worked as the head of the legal department at the Ministry for Coordination of Environmental Affairs in Maputo; as project coordinator at the World Resources Institute (Africa Program) in Washington DC; and as the General Director and Senior Legal Advisor of the Mozambican environmental advocacy NGO Centro Terra Viva (CTV). In 2017 Alda was elected National Human Rights Commissioner where she served for 5 years. He has more than 10 years of professional experience, the majority of which was spent in the hydropower industry for more than 8 years. The key areas of competence include detailed transient/water hammer analysis, hydrological analysis and hydraulic design/analysis. Andrew is a Senior Environmental Scientist with Ecofish Research based in British Columbia, Canada. He holds a BSc in Zoology from Edinburgh University and a PhD in Fish Ecology from the University of Glasgow. With 15 years of consulting experience, Andrew has worked in stream, wetland, and lake ecosystems from the tropics to the Arctic Circle and has international experience in conducting research and baseline studies, environmental impact assessments, environmental flow assessments, operational and compliance monitoring, and the development of mitigation and habitat compensation plans. This experience has been gained in the hydropower, mining, oil and gas, and pulp and paper sectors in North America, Asia, South and Central America, and Europe. His experience has ranged from evaluating the physiological and behavioural impacts to individual fish from chemical and physical disturbances, to the population level impacts associated with multiple stressors at the watershed scale. Andrew also has extensive experience in developing guidance for regional and national regulators with respect to environmental monitoring programs and the design, assessment and implementation of environmental flows to improve the sustainability of hydropower and other resource development projects. He is also published in the primary scientific literature on environmental flows, fish passage, and fish ecology.

She holds an MSc in Civil Engineering from Polytechnic University of Tirana, and a Master of Law and Public Administration from the University of Tirana, and undertook various complementary trainings in valuation, law and finance. She is a Licensed Engineer, a Licensed Property Appraiser, and a Certified Attorney in her home country Albania.

Arjola has over 23 years of work experience with a demonstrated history of working with public and private sector organisations. She recently completed a seven-year mission within Trans Adriatic Pipeline AG, holding the position of Land Acquisition Manager for Albania and it is currently engaged with Resettlement Planning for Skavica Hydropower Project in Albania. She has significant experience of working as consultant for project financed from international institutions for several infrastructure end energy projects, conducting environmental and social due diligence and developing environmental and social impact assessment, E&S management plans, with special focus on Stakeholder Engagement, Land Acquisition and Resettlement Frameworks and Plans. As head of the power station, he was responsible for the efficient running of the power plant and managing stakeholder needs (involving the planning, designing and implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility projects). He is a certified Internal Auditor (ISO9001, ISO14001 and OHSAS18001) and was Management Appointee for OHSAS18001 for Tata Power hydro divisions (2012 to 2015) being responsible for continued improvements in safety practices. Since Aug 2015, Prabhakar has been working in Zambia as CEO of Itezhi Tezhi Power Corporation, a Joint Venture between Tata Power and ZESCO to own and operate 120MW hydropower station in Itezhi Tezhi district where he has been instrumental in the formulation and implementation of Emergency Preparedness & Response Plan, Environment and Social Management Plan and guidelines for identification & implementation of CSR projects for the company.

Rayhon is a Senior Partnerships Officer at the Energy sector of the Industrial Promotion Service (IPS), of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED). She works for Pamir Energy company in Tajikistan, Badakhshon Energy company in Afghanistan and North Pakistan Energy company in Northern Pakistan. She graduated from the American University of Central Asia where she studied Journalism and Mass Communication, holds an MSc in Public Policy and Management from SOAS University of London and studied Islamic Studies and Humanity at the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London. Rayhon is a highly skilled and dedicated development specialist with a passion for creating positive change in the world and contribute to improving quality of life. With 10 years of experience in development including in energy sector in particular, Rayhon has honed her expertise in designing and implementing effective development strategies to address social, economic, and environmental challenges. She has also developed deep understanding of the interconnectedness of communities and the importance of sustainable development. Throughout her career, Rayhon has worked with various international organizations, non-profits, and governmental organizations like the AKDN, UNDP, World Bank focusing on rural electrification and poverty alleviation, demonstrating exceptional skills in conducting needs analysis and securing funding from donors and stakeholders.

Sera is a Civil Engineer with a 20-year professional experience in a leading consultancy firm in Greece, Hydroexigiantiki Consulting Engineers. She graduated from the National Technical University of Athens where she specialized in Hydraulic works and Water Recourses Management and holds an MSc in Soil Mechanics and Environmental Geotechnics from Imperial College in London, U.K. She initially worked as a Geotechnical Engineer and later joined Hydroexigiantiki where she works, as an Engineering Manager, on water works design, especially dams. Her experience focuses on multipurpose earthfill and rockfill dam design at all implementation stages and extends to dam safety issues such as First Filling, Surveillance and Emergency Action Plans. As member of supervision and support consulting teams, she has participated in the construction and first filling of major dam projects in Greece, while she has also worked on other dam related issues such as Water Resources Management for dam projects, dam sedimentation and dam break analysis. She is an ISO 9001 certified Auditor/Lead Auditor and currently Vice President of GCOLD and substitute member at the Greek Dam Administrative Authority.

Susanne is an Environmental Specialist with Tractebel Engineering GmbH (formerly Lahmeyer) and holds a degree (Dipl.-Ing. agr., equiv. to M.Sc.) in Environmental Protection and Rural Development. With 30 years of experience in environmental assessment, mitigation and management plans, she has worked on projects financed by various financing institutions and is well acquainted with international environmental and social safeguard policies. Having worked in 20 countries, Susanne has a broad knowledge of environmental and social issues related to different sectors, regions and project types with emphasis on hydropower and water resources. She has been responsible for various SEAs, ESIAs and ESMPs for irrigation schemes, dam and HPP projects. Carried out reviews to ensure compliance of planned hydropower projects with World Bank Group's environmental and social safeguards requirements. In addition to hydropower and irrigation schemes, Susanne has experience of EIAs of transport, thermal power and incineration schemes; often with special attention to evolving environmental legal framework and licensing procedures. In this context, she has assisted not only project proponents but also licensing authorities in the energy and transportation sectors.
