The Kaunertal Expansion Project (KXP) is a project in the Tyrol province of Austria to expand the capacity of the existing hydropower facility by 1015 MW. It was proposed by TIWAG Tiroler Wasserkraft AG (“TIWAG”), a corporation owned by the Province of Tyrol.

The project was assessed between 20-28 September 2012 using the implementation tool of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol. The Protocol assesses 20 topics and assigns scores for each between 1 and 5, with 5 representing Proven Best Practice and 3 representing Basic Good Practice.

Overall, the findings showed very strong performance at the level of basic good practice, with only a few areas requiring further work. Many of the proven best practice criteria are met, with some topics requiring further work in the assessment aspects; others requiring additional attention to communications, disclosure, collaboration and stakeholder engagement; and for a number of topics there was insufficient evidence at this point in time to demonstrate the Outcomes criterion was met.
