Planta Hidroeléctrica Reventazón (PHR) is a 306 MW hydropower plant located in Costa Rica on the Reventazón River which flows towards the Caribbean Sea. PHR has been developed and will be operated by Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE).
The assessment was carried out over the period June to August 2017 using the implementation stage tool of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol. The Protocol assesses 20 topics and assigns scores for each between 1 and 5, with 5 representing Proven Best Practice and 3 representing Basic Good Practice.
PHR will be the largest hydropower project in Central America. It has been financed by a group of Costa Rican and international financial institutions, which has contributed to improved sustainability performance.
PHR meets or exceeds all basic good practice criteria in all 19 topics evaluated through the assessment, meeting the proven best practice criteria on five topics (see diagram, below).
