Sarawak Energy is Malaysia’s largest renewable energy developer and has been working with International Hydropower Association Sustainability (IHAS) since 2013 to strengthen sustainable hydropower development in the region and uphold its long-standing commitment to supplying clean, reliable and affordable electricity to power Sarawak.

Hydropower in Malaysia

With an installed capacity of 6,275MW, Malaysia has only developed about 18% of its total hydropower potential and out of this, Sarawak contributes 3,452MW (as of December 2021).

Plans to explore and expand the country’s hydropower potential are already underway, and companies like Sarawak Energy are taking the necessary steps to ensure that this is done in a way that provides positive gains for the people and environment.

Since the inception of the partnership between IHAS and Sarawak Energy, a total of seven internal and official sustainability assessments have been carried out across different hydropower projects, with three more currently in planning. Of these, four assessments were carried out internally by Sarawak Energy’s staff who received formal training from IHAS on the Hydropower Sustainability Tools. Sarawak Energy has  73 employees who are Certified Users of the Hydropower Sustainability Tools and 22 employees who are Internal Assessors – a record amongst IHAS’ industry partners.

“Sarawak Energy is Malaysia’s largest renewable energy developer and one of the early adopters of the guidelines in the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol, ensuring our hydropower projects are developed and operated in line with international standards and best practices.”
-- Sharbini Suhaili, CEO of Sarawak Energy

IHAS’ capacity building programmes are designed to equip local hydropower developers with the necessary tools and expert knowledge to become self-sufficient and carry out operations according to international best practices. Over the years, Sarawak Energy has demonstrated its commitment not only to making sustainability a guiding principle within its operations, but also to educate professionals to ensure across the board implementation of the Hydropower Sustainability Tools.

Driving a sustainable future

As part of Sarawak Energy’s commitment to continuous improvement and sustainable hydropower development, the company’s next step is to certify three of its projects against the Hydropower Sustainability Standard, with the Baleh Hydroelectric Project expected to be assessed against the Standard in early 2023.
